So, it was Saturday and the afternoon was open. Went out to Long Island, did some tracking with my dog, then decided to take a ride out to Clifton NJersey and check out an aquarium store out there. They have absolutely beautiful salt and freshwater fish, I was glad I went.
Saw some baby Celestial Pearl Danios, gorgeous! Does anyone have them? I think I read somewhere they were not as easy as the regular Danios to take care of. Will google sometime this week, just wondering what the real deal is from someone who knows first hand. I noticed some of the info in some books are not to right, from what I remember anyhow. It has been years since I kept fish. Thanks for any info:)

Hey bg,

I have a tank of about 5 dozen right now (babies that is) - my adults are outside in a 40 gallon tub for the summer. I have only had them for 4 or 5 months so I am not an expert by any means. I have not had any problems with them at all BUT I feed mine live food almost exclusively (live baby brine shrimp and micro worms) so I don't know how they will do on the average tank fare of flake only. I am starting to add some fry powder and a few crushed flake along with some decapped brine shrimp eggs to see if they will eat these also. They are cool little fish - how much were they asking by the way? Trying to gauge how much to charge and how much to recommend to my LFS when they sell them.

Thanks,

I have Celestial Pearls and the one piece of advice I can give is PLANTS!!

They love the cover of lots of plants. I use Vals and Sags, Anubias, and lots of Guppy Grass which they love.

You won't see them as often as you like but they will be happy!

FYI - I only see males offered at the LFS, if at all. I have heard that some online stores also only offer males (not sure of this since it is second hand info)

Since you obviously have females as well as males get more $$$ for them :)

This was for ponderingky

Hey Holly,

Thanks for the tip - I would be selling both males and females - doesn't matter to me and I would want to get both if I was customer. Have you seen them at a LFS? Mine around here have never heard of them - trying to guage a price (both to sell and for them to charge).

Thanks again,

I only saw them once in the Chicago area, and it was males only for around $7 each. If you are going to have to ship them ask for more. They (CPDs) are for sale at Thatfishplace.com and they are not cheap when you add in the shipping.

Breed enough of them so you won't be sorry. I have males and females but the tank is so thick with plants I'm lucky that I even see them, let alone try to figure out if they are male or female.

I have had folks PM me asking for females too, so my advice would be to hold onto the females or at least breed enough of them - there is a market out there.

I'm sorry - It is Drs. Foster and Smith Live Aquaria that is selling the Celestial Pearls.

Hey ponderingky, the average price that I've seen both online and at my lfs is around 4-5 dollars each.

I actually just finished my planted 40b CPD tank, here's a few pics, sorry the water is still a little cloudy from the ecocomplete and they are HARD to take still pics of lol. Hopefully their eggs will have a chance in this tank, I know they are spawning because I've already got some of their fry growing out after catching some eggs.

Hey Holly and Jeta,

Thanks (I didn't mean to hijack this thread! :nono:). I love the pics - I had mine in a heavily planted 10 and saw only glimpses of them - they remind me of trout - can't wait until these grow. I plan on bringing in the adults later on this year - I figure they like colder water anyway so I will leave them outside into October. I will always hold on to enough males and females to have a good breeding stock - good advice, thanks. $4 to $5 is what I have seen on-line - I was curious on what the LFS was charging to figure out what they are paying wholesale.

Now hopefully bg can get some input on CPD care and hardiness - I give them two thumbs up!

Thanks again,

Thanks, I enjoyed reading the threads:) If then need a cooler tank I think I'll keep them on their own with some cories. The ones I saw were just so beautiful and I think they were $6 don't quote me tho, I looked at tons of fish. Never saw such great clean tanks and beautiful fish in one place. JetaJ your CPD's are lovely!
