ceramic ring substitute?

Hi all,

I'm just wondering if anyone has used any sort of substitute for ceramic rings. It strikes me that the shape shouldn't matter as much as overall surface on a microscopic scale. I'm thinking of using broken terra potta as a replacement. Any thoughts?

Are you looking for mechanical, bacterial or both kind?

just bacterial. i'd be using floss and padding for mechanical

If you are looking for bacterial filtration I believe ceramic material may not provide the best surface area. But I may be wrong. Pot scrubbers are cheap and may provide more surface for the bacteria.

I use mostly lava rock meant for grills.
