just saw one in my tank! is this good?

don't have this type of snails in my tank, i have one mystery and one ramhorn, and i just finished treating my ricca for snails, some very little are still alive, but a Cerith Snail???

no no no, those are saltwater. You have a trumpet snail. Trumpet snails hitch rides on plants you buy. They are one of the best snails you can have in a planted tank. They burrow in the soil like earth worms and come out at night to eat algae not plants.

saltwater is what i figured, but i know what i saw. can it live in my fw?

unless they're another type which looks just like that one, i have one in my tank.

i saw him last night, looking all day for him today and nothing, if it comes out again ill try to get a picture for you guys.

Allow me to clarify:

"Cerith Snails" = marine (saltwater)

(Lookalike) "Malaysian Trumpet Snails"/"MTS" (Melanoides turberculata) = freshwater

ok cool, but are they as good as the cerith? i mean are my plants in danger? will i have a outburst of millions of baby malaysion trumpet snails?

should i keep it or search and destroy?

Keep it. It eats dead plant matter and some algaes.

They are worth next to nothing, and re produce very quickly

Actually I consider MTS quite valuable. They are one of the few FW aquarium snails that do a decent job on glass (Olive Nerites do also).

As others have said it is likely a Malaysain Trumpet Snail (MTS). I like these guys, but don't yet have any myself. Hopefully will soon. THey help stir up the substrate, and are especially good at preventing dead spots in sand bottomed tanks. I am going to have some in my planted tank. They are usually harmless, though there appears to be some mutants that are eating other snails (just making holes in thier shells, mostly the apple snails), but this is rare and shouldn't be a worry for you. Yes, they do reproduce rather quickly, and don't lay eggs, but give live birth. However, with just one, it will take a while to be over run. Some people are never over run, others wind up with lots. Just pick out any you don't want, but I"d say keep some of them.E
