Hello,

2 of my Orandas and a common are chasing one of my Black moor, again. Is this going to be a problem for the moor? Is he/she going to die from exhaustion? He/she was chased about 2 weeks ago and ended up with a bruised eye, I put he/she in my 10g hospital tank for 7 days and treated he/she with Melafix............now he/she is back in the main tank just to be chased again. Any advice on what I should do? Thank you.
(All my goldies are about 6 months old.)

Hi,

How big is the tank they are in? Are you sure these goldfish are not displaying breeding signs? How big are each fish? Have you observed males having white tubercles on their gill covers and front pectoral fins? Is the black moor noticeably rounder?

It's a 55g with 2 moores and 3 Orandas about 3 to 4" big. I am suspecting breeding signs also and yes, the moor is much rounder than before. Also the "male" has 2 or 3 white tubercles. What I did a few min ago is..........I separated the moore and the most aggressive Oranda "male" in a 10g tank and "he" keeps chasing "her" but at least "she's" only chased by one and there are no places in the 10g where she can bump her eye again. The 10g has a filter (Whisper ex 45) and an air pump and I did transfer some old media from the 55g filters to the 10g filter. If this is breeding, how long will this chasing last? Will the Moor end up OK?

Remove the hard decorations and replace them with bushy plants such as hornworts, Java moss and cabomba. This will encourage them to spawn and injuries will be less likely with soft decors. I'd remove the comet though as it might get too feisty and keep a watch on the rest of your fish for injuries. Get a divider as well just in case. If you don't want to rear the fry which does entail a lot of responsibilities, leave the eggs for them to eat. They will reabsorb the proteins in the process.:)

This is strange. The chasing stopped and I moved them back in the main tank and she is not being chased anymore. I did not see any eggs, unless it happened during the night. Thanks for the advice.

why DO fish chase each other?

Did you remove the hard decors as a precaution and replace them with softer ones particularly plants? Don't keep your guard off yet. Keep a close watch on them just in case as sometimes spawning rituals can result in injuries.

Angie, fish chase for various reasons particularly spawning routine and bullying. It depends totally on the scenario so it's a case by case basis.

Yes, my wife removed the hard stuff. I got fish, plants and the filters intakes only.
