Do you think it'll be cheaper to purchase a replacement pane of glass from a glass company or from say, Home Depot? Not tempered.

I think Home Depot does not carry anything but "single strength" glass. It's only 1/8" thick.

A glass shop is your best bet, but honestly I have heard far too many horror stories to trust anything less than a tank that I bought new. The amount of water damage that even just a ten gallon can cause is simply far beyond the cost of a new tank.

I've been ripped off too many times by people on Craigslist. I can't afford to buy a new tank anymore. I have a collection of broken tanks.

I'd go to a glass shop.

Sell the broken ones on CL, and go buy some new tanks during the new Petco dollar a gallon sale. Some great deals...

What I did was measure the opposite unbroken panel exactly length X width X height X thickness. The thickness (off by 1/16) and height (off by 1/8) can be off a little but the width and length have to be within 1/32 of its opposite end panel. Then do a search on Google for your city and glass shops, glass, cutters, glass window pane exc exc. Call and ask if they have in stock to cut or can order the measured panel. Cost will depend on mostly thickness and length, anything thicker then 1/4" usually has to be ordered from the factory and takes about 2 weeks. My 24" X 72" X 1/2" tempered bottom panel cost me $165 out the door to repair my $50 Craiglist 244 tank, stand & canopy that had a cracked bottom. He tried to get away with charging me $250 but the good Lord got me back the $250, after which he wasn't going to charge me anything but I forgave him and gave him $50 for coming clean. Oh and I wouldn't mention what the glass is for becasue I got allot of flack about buying a new tank and that they are not liable bla-bla-bla. When I told them it was for an aquarium the price seemed to jump from $120 to $140 then $160. If you tell them too much by the time you call the 3rd glass shop they will know who you are through dispatch and the price will be fixed.

Here is the thread to the whole story and rebuild.

Go to a glass shop. They can hook you up with anything you need. If you are replacing a pane, you might as well tear the whole thing apart and resilicone the panes as well as the seams. It isn't hard at all but if you doing small tanks, it will be pretty close to a push with the Petco buck a gallon sale.
For example:
1 tube of GE I Silicone $5
1 pane of glass for a 20 gallon cut to exact specs: $10-15
Razor blades for scraping $1
Bandaides for accidents occuring from the item above $3

call around and get estimates glass company will be best bet.

ya make sure and call around.. the same pc of glass can very greatly from one place to the next... I am a journeyman glazier for 10 yrs and would never buy glass from my company...to expensive
