today i saw one of my female barbs belly up floating in some plants. is there anyway to diagnose this with the fish beingbelly up floating or was it just from natural causes? the only other thing i noticed was the belly was kind of big but i just thought some female barbs had big bellys. could it be bloat or something? i have another female cherry barb thats also has a large belly. maybe she had eggs and that killed her? i do know theyre breeding, i have a juvie female in a grow out tank now. maybe she got stressed bc the ac isnt working right and gets 84+ in my room? any help would be appreciated.

when any creature dies, decomposition produces gasses within the body cavity. that is most likely why your barb was bloated after death. the gasses are lighter than water, so if the gasses are in the abdominal cavity (the underside of the fish), then it is only natural that that part of the fish will be upright.

how long have you had this barb? could be old age. or could be illness.

whenever i have a fish pass away unexpectedly, i do a large water change and monitor the other fish very closely for a while.

ive had it for about a year. i just did a water change yesterday and have plants so i didnt do one. another one of my females has a fatter belly and didnt eat today. i feed bloodworms with garlic. i dont know what would be wrong. all the barbs acted fine until i rescaped and took some fish out and added some fish. im leaving in a week for vacation so id like to get this figured out if it was a disease.
