Wow, these guys can be active at times! I've had my tank going for 2 weeks now with 3 cherry barbs, and am just watching the nitrite now. Been buisy with the water changes about every 2-3 days, and am just glad my tap water is fish friendly!

Almost every time I walk by the tank, these guys are chasing each other around the tank! I think they will be happier once the parameters get under control and I can add a couple more.

Curious what you mean about your tap water being fish friendly. You do treat the tap water to remove chlorine don't you?

The tank is a 10 gal, for the moment. Once it's cycled 2 or 3 more barbs will be brought in, then 8 or so neons, at which point the barbs will start cycling a 30 or 50 gal tank.

As for fish friendly water, it's well water so there isn't anything in it that wouldn't be found in a natural water system.

once the cycle is done, you are best off waiting on the neons and then transfering everything from the ten gallon to the 30/50 gallon. that way it is already cycled, and the bacteria can handle the six cherry barbs and are ready to grow to accomodate neons.

Agreed, why run the fish through another cycle. Stick all of the fish in the 30-50 gallon with the filter from the 10 to seed things. Much less problem that way.

By the way, your male cherry barbs will generally be bright red, especially if there are other males present. The females tend to the more orange coloration.

i have cherry barbs, they are very active in courting, i the males are briliant red and then this is courting behavior and then they spawn, but the other ones eat the eggs most times before they hit the gravel..
but the male chases the female a few days before she gets ready to spawn..
