As a wait patiently for my tank to cycle, I have been researching fish. Ideally, what I would like to have in my moderately planted low light 36 gallon tank, are 8 - 10 Cherry Barbs, 1 Pearl Gourami, 2 Kuhli Loaches, and Ammono and Cherry shrimp. I have heard that the Cherry Barbs can be fin nippers, and I am a little nervous about the Kuhli's and the plants. Any insight or suggestions would be appreciated.

well not quite the same fish but my tiger barbs don't bug my pearl gourami at all. if anything the gourami bugs the barbs hahaha

Kuhlis will be fine but you'll need to get 5 or 6 minimum for them to be happy & come out of hiding more. Sounds like a very nice fish mix to me.

cherries are not nippy like other barbs...they do best with a harem type mix (more females to males). I have 2m/4f with dwarf gourami, tetras, cories, and shrimp. I really enjoy them as they are always actively engaged with each other and more vibrant than alot of pictures show.

Cherries are pretty mellow fish, so dont worry bout that.

And yeah, get more kuhlis. They're boring unless they have plenty of 'mates to play with.

Thanks for the advice guys (and girls) 1 Pearl Gourami, 9 Cherry Barbs (3 males, 6 females), 4 or 5 Kuhli's and shrimp. Not to much for a 36 gallon?

You have a really nice mix there. The only thing I'd suggest (in agreement with someone else) is that you go to 5-6 Kuhlis.

Be sure to post pictures when you get your tank ready! :thm:

Looks good. I second Irishspy's suggestion on kuhlis.
