Cherry shrimp and ?

Just got my new shrimp in today. I could dance to the beat "Im so exitied". These LITTLE guys are soooooo cute. Going to set up a 5gal. right now they are in a little tank probaly 1/2 gal. I am getting a 5 gallon in the next day or two to put them in. Will not have much cycling as I am going to alow my big tank to do a mini cycle becouse I am using its substract and adding more. I already have the filter media cycled for this tank. I am going to build a 10 gal stand and hood but until this is done the 5 is going to have to work. What would you all put in with shrimp that you plan on breading. I am thinking snails (mystery or apple) what do you all think?
 
Accualy can you mix shrimp with snails if you are breeding?

Or will one of the other eat the other?

I know they have a little difference in perferd levels but I think I can keep them in an area they both fit into.
 
I keep red ramshorn snails in my cherry tank. I have never had a problem with mixing to two.
 
Thank you I am new to the FW shrimp and have only delt with pest snails. Even in the petstors I managed I didn't have shrimp or snails becouse I didn't have the information I needed to properly house or tell the customers how to house them. If I couldn't give good advice I wouldn't sell. Oh how the internet has changed that now I can get the neeeded info quick
 
You could also keep other types of shrimp with the cherries if you wanted. You just have to be careful about which ones. Some species will interbreed and you'll end up with some hybrid.
 
Yea I was looking into that but I will see how I do with this first batch. They were kinda smaller then I expected so I am going to have to go through a mini cycle. I am using precycled gravel so that all I have to have is the sponge cycle. Shouldn't be to bad I will watch the water quality. Once this is finished and they give their first litter of pups I will think about other shrimp. Crossing my fingers they make the mini cycle as I couldn't put them in with my bigger fish (Just small goldfish that I used to cycle). I am kinda glad that I got them their own though becouse now I can get my Koi Angiles for the 45.
 
Be careful with filters and during water changes. Unlike ghost shrimp or yamato shrimp, these seem to get sucked into HOBs and out with the gravel vac. I'm not sure whether I have more than one of the 11 I got left :o.
 
I started with 12 and now have somewhere in the range of 75-125....not exactly sure...and I just got them last April. The only thing about them is that anytime you can add new cherry shrimp to the line the better to keep the amount of inbreeding down and therefore keep the amount of deformities down. I know that there will be lots of inbreeding but the more you can split their family tree the better. I keep mine around 7.6-7.8pH and gH around 4-7 is good, and no heater...my water stays at room temp...around 68-72. Good Luck and Have fun with your shrimp...I love mine
 
Yea I will be looking for trades when they get established. Figure there are others that would trade shrimp to keep a healthy line. I don't like to imbreed at all but with animals you have to keep multiple of its not always posible to avoid. Thanks for the replies I have all the right paramiters except my water is a little harder. If I find I am having any problem with this then I will wet my tank with a little RO maybe 15% RO would help make it softer. I have already tested for coper and its safe.
 
Oh Yea I forgot to mention I am running undergravel and sponge filtration for now. If I have any problem and feel I need to give it some more filtration I will cover a behind the tank filter with a lot of sponge material. I also covered my uprise tubes with netting so that they cant go down the tubs. Hopefully that works going to add some charcal to the sponge filter I made when I get a chance to order it. I also did something I swore I would never do and I bought some gear at wal-mart becouse they had plant substract in the outdore pond supplie section that was safe for fish. I usaly don't buy fish supplies from wal-mart but I figured it wasn't in the fish dept so why not. I am letting this cycle in another tank so that I can give the shrimp a better substract when its done.
