Right now, I have a very healthy colony of cherry shrimp in a heavily planted 10g. The shrimp that I first received were very bright red, and they soon dropped baby shrimplets. Now, those babies are having babies of their own. I am just worried about decreasing the genetic diversity in my tank. Would this lead to disease and deformities? Would trading shrimp with other people also help?

Getting new bloodlines in is always a good idea, if you are concerned with color then be picky about where you get your new guys. Truth is in fish keeping it's called line breeding, which is how most color variations get started. Don't worry about it, especially if you are only on the second generation born in your tank, but getting new blood every now and again isn't a bad idea.

Personally, I usually pick a bag at the local club auction every 6-12 months. I've usually just thinned my herd about that time and by late in the day, I can usually get a dozen or so for $6.
