Choosing prefilter sponges..

*bump* Going to try you all again.

I bought http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produ...&Ntk=All&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Np=1&N=2004 and that is not working. Using the sponge alone leaves the bottom surface of the intake exposed and it doesn't fit to the tapered end of the Penguin Biowheel filter intakes. I could remove the tapered end, but the intake tube is rectangular, so the sponge filter as a whole still doesn't fit.

Does anyone have Penguin Bio-wheel filters and know of sponges that will work on their intakes?

I can't believe they don't sell sponges specifically for this. :bs: And I don't want to use panty hose.

you bought a sponge filter that is used with an air pump or a power head. Juse buy filter media and zip tye it around it.

Buy a sponge used for filtration. ie aquaclear filter sponges. Poke holes in them and stick the intake through them.

So that's how it works eh? In that case, I'll grab some scissors and work on engineering a suitable solution out of these. They don't look it in the pic, but they're huge, and on the bright side, they're black.

I did a lot of searching and found only one sponge I liked that was both small and not open bottomed... and that's the aquarium systems one... it fits maxi jets... but is also fine on most 1/2" and 5/8" intakes.

I saw those, too. The intakes on the Penguin 200's are very big. Haven't measured but I'd say atleast an inch if not more. Not only that, but rectangular making the sponge stretch even further to round the corners.

have you tried tieing a media bag on the filter intake?

the one on the flter in my 5 gallon platy fry tank works great. just make sure you tie the filter bag's strings together as tight as they will go.

i was just gonna ask. The pre filter sponges work really well, but the filter media bag tied around the intake serves as a great makeshift sponge.
