cichlid and shrimp

I was wondering the same thing. I have a 29 that is somewhat planted with lots of rocks. I have my Calvus with them and I know they are invert. eaters. I have some cherry shrimp coming in the mail so I guess I will have to see how they do together. I hope that by planting alot that the shrimp can hide and the extra babies could get eaten. Oh and are the yellow ones you are thinking of yellow labs?

i think so... yellow labs sounds correct. i know the ones i'm thinking of are about the same size as the german blues give or take.

I have RCS and several types of cichlids. They find the RCS most delectable and can make short work of them. Same with my ramshorns and spixi. I have some in a guppy tank as well and there is a very small growth rate of RCS which leads me to believe the guppies are eating the young. Over-all I don't mix and the snails and RCS have a tank dedicated to them. Still trying to figure out how they made the leap to the other tank.

Checkerboards, genus Dicrossus would be the only possibility in my mind, and even then I'm not really certain. Smaller shrimp would still be food but Checkerboards are small enough that adult CRS and RCS would be an awfully big mouthful.

excuzzzeme, AiWen and SubRosa thank you for your responses/suggestions. it is much appreciated all around.

I was kind of wondering the same thing. I recently bought some ghost shrimp and am thinking about adding some amanos as well. The a** manager at my fav LFS, said that as long as there is hiding places for my shrimp, my orange chromides shoudl not bother them at all. Ill try it out and see how it goes! lol

I have a pair of kribs and a leopard ctenopoma in my tank (not a cichlid, but a larger predator none-the-less). In my experiance, the only shrimp that make it in my tank, are FULLY grown amano's. These fully grown amano's are ~2 inches or so.

I had a fully grown one in there that survived fine until a medication w/copper accident killed him.

Since then, I have dropped about 10 small amano's (~1 inch or under) in the tank, and all have since disappeared... Tasty snacks for one thing or the other I suppose. (def gone, couldn't even find them with complete tank tear down...)

SO....

I started a 12 gallon invert/frog aquarium where I am raising amano's to full size before adding them to my community tank.

Hope I helped!

I plan on doing the same. The RCS I have are all larger, and are completely ignored by the Rams I have. The tank is densely planted so the shrimp have places to hide but I still see them perched on leaves in full view all the time. The Rams don't seem to realize yet that they probably taste quite a bit like the Mysis shrimp they get.
