I was hoping to get some ideas of what kinds of foods that you all feed your cichlids other than the standard pellets. I have read so many things about vegetables and such but never how to prepare them. Do you just drop then in the tank and let them go at it or what?

I have been feeding them just pellets, but they seem to be getting bored with the pellets. I have also given them frozen blood worms and frozen brine from time to time.

I am just looking for ideas, any input would be appreciated.

Thanks!

which cichlids do you have??

some are more carnivorous and require a high protein diet while others neeed more vegetation in their food.

IMO pellets are plentiful considering you are using a good quailty pellet. I use the HBH line of soft and pellet food there are lots of different brands for different fish and cichlids. I give them some frozen foods for a snack once in a while. There may be other that say a variety is better and some that will say a high quality pellet is better. I personally have some beautiful and happy fish just feeding pellets.

I feed my Malawians veggie flakes, NLS cichlid pellets, and occasionally cucumber or zucchini. I just slice the cucumber or zucchini horizontally down the middle and then in half vertically (so makes 4 wedges). Then I peel the wedge and take out some of the seeds, then toss it in the tank. Some people pop them in the microwave or blanch them in water, but I was told that it takes away some of the nutritional value, so I just toss them in after they've reached room temp. now. :)

I have CA/SA cichlids and they get the following:
Omega One Super Kelp pellets
Omega One Super Color pellets
Hikari Algae Disks
Hikari Gold
Freeze Dried Krill
Freeze Dried Plankton
Frozen Blood Worms
Cucumber
earthworms

The only ones that eat the cucumber are the severums and my yoyo loaches.
For veggies, the Super Kelp pellets are great. I order them into my LFS special because nobody else in the area carries them.
