This is only affeacting my young ones. yesterday ( 7-26-11 ) I just quaintened(sp?) 2 others that look like they might have it too. Though suddenly last night I had the brilliant plan to put in some Aquarium salt. Of course right away the fins started to open up again and they seemed to look better. The pictures i am going to show are ones taken before I added the salt. This platy had the same signs and then died. WATCH OUT though there is a picture of the fish dead. I know I seem weird taking a picture of the poor thing, but I wanted to make sure I got a good enough picture so that it will help my other fishes from not dying. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Update ( 7-27-11 2:17pm ):
The two fish that looked bad are looking alot better! I think I just answerd my own problem. Haha, but I will still post this just in case if something goes wrong. Do not be afraid to give me any advice! I love to learn and want to take care of my fish the best that I can!

Genetic or Improper diet and/or prolonged exposure to UNIDEAL WATER CONDITION such as acidic water for most livebearers.

History of your test results?

I wouldnt just dismissed it as Genetic as I learned from many trial runs that very similar symptoms described/depicted above has more to do with its emvironmental factors.

ive had this happn to my platy fry, weirdly enough when i donated them to a larger tank which was cleaner than mine, they all recoverd

@ Cerianthus: I have taken my water to be tested at Petsmart almost every month and they have said the water conditions are just fine or need tweeking in a few places.

@ petluvr: I have had the mother since March.

UpDate: My Adult Dalmation Molly is now showing signs of sicksness and are the same signs the others have gotten. Here is a picture of her to help. Molly again.jpg

I had similar problems with select fish in my tank at varying times. No other fish displayed signs or symptoms. I tried many things and nothing seemed to work. I finally tried a potassium permangeanate dip. Things got better almost overnight. Not saying you have what I had, I'm just saying.

Chilodonella
Symptoms:
Heavy breathing, flashing movements, clamped fins, overproduction of mucous membrane, lethargic movements, loss of appetite

Causes:
It is caused by the "heart-shaped" ciliated protozoan, Chilodonella itself.

Treatment:
Sera Costapur, Sera Omnisan, Malachite Green, Potassium Permanganate, Formalin, Copper Sulfate, salt baths

Thank you so much! I will try it and let you know how it works out! :D
