Are there any clams I can keep with 4.64 watts per gallon of pc lighting. I really want a clam, but do not want to waste my money. Will this lighting also be enough for a carpet anemone.
IMHO, neither.
some people may say you will be able to keep a hippo. sp clam. but i have never done so, so i oculdnt say. i also think they are ugly:dance2: lol
I have approximately the same amount of lighting but I use only NO lamps up till now. (planning on T-5's for my 65 soon)
I have a sebae anemone and crocea and tridacnia clams and have had them for many years. It's a 65 with 8 NO's over it, about 3" off the water, clams in the top 1/3rd, anemone on the bottom wedged under his rock.
Crocea is not as good a fit because the patterns loose their brightness in time but the tridacnia just grows and grows and..........
I had less on a 125G 10 years ago and my green carpet grew bigger than an LP record. In fact it survived all of my novice attempts at a reef tank. The only pain was, (and I am sure it was due to the substandard lighting) that it moved around alot. After I upgraded to 6500K VHO tubes he was quite happy. If you are looking for mega growth try a feeder gold fish every couple of weeks. Quite facinating to watch a carpet anemone eat one. As for the clam I'm currently running 3.87W per gallon and my clam looks quite happy. (See pic under "post your pic here" else where on this forum).
Tridacna squamosa, Tridacna gigas,Tridacna derasa, Tridacna tevora, and Hippopus hippopus can do alright under pc because they come from deeper water. Tridacna Maxima and Tridacna corcea come from shallow lagoons so they will only really do well under halides. the loss in color means the clam is not healthy and will not live out a full or happy life but none the less if you dont mind that then go ahead and give it a try. they all need high calcium levels 400-450 recommended and stable water chemistry is a must along with feeding when they are under 6 inches after 3.5 they become less dependent on feeding but around 6 there majority of food comes from the zooxanthellia in there mantel. thus they are dependent on lighting. if you place them up high then you might have luck. try getting a large one( i know this expensive $70-100) but to let you all know the price for clams is a rip off they only cost around $14-25 whole sale in the 3in-6in range, but larger they get expensive. also try to get an aqua cultured one because they are over fished. as for food phytoplankton with marine snow and live phytoplankton would be best.
also there is no tridacna clam they all are the genus Tridacna. when you buy a clam and they say its a tridacna that means they dont know the species.
not to sound like a jerk or anything( i just wana see you animals live) but dont feed freshwater fish to saltwater animals they have a different fatty acid that isnt good for saltwater animals and its been known to give saltwater fish liver failure.
