OK - I have a few follow-on questions regarding an optimum cleaning regimen. Thanks for everyone's very kind attention.
How long should I wait for my initial filter change? I have an Aquatech 5-15 HOB which recommends monthly changes. Should I wait for the cycle to stabilize before I go yanking around with the filter?
What preventative maintenance schedule/procedures do you guys recommend for your average HOB?
This question sounds kind of silly, but WTH - when I vacuum the gravel (15 lbs of medium generic aquarium gravel in a 10 gal. rectangle) I find that if I do it thoroughly, the water level drops faster than my coverage - should I concentrate on one half of the bottom and alternate or would it be better to work faster to cover the whole bottom each time?

as far as cleaning the glass goes, i dont know about isopropyl, but DENATURED ALCOHOL is the best cleaning agent known to man, and very very overlooked, and will not harm the EXTERIOR of your tank in any way, including the seams. as far as the gravel vacumming goes, i may look into buying a smaller size vac, in my old 10 gallon, i usually got everything vacced and still had water to spare before i got to my 25% mark
