Cloudy water

Hey guys

I added sand to my new aquarium and the water became really cloudy. I rinsed it to what I would call thorough, but it still clouded. I did about a 60% water change and it cleared up a bit.

I put 4 Danios in the tank, they seem to be doing fine even with low visibility.

What can i do to help clear the water up? Should I turn the filter on (I figured it would be best to be kept off to avoid damage to the filter), should I do more water changes or just be patient and see if it clears up overnight?

Thanks for the help guys!

It will probably be settled a lot by morning. If not, it will. I would just do a water change or two in the next couple days.

Dont do a water change, and yes turn the filters on. I just switched to sand in both my tanks, sand clouds the water when you first add it, i cleared mine up with 2 days by turning on the filters, and adding polyester fiber (pillow floss) to the filters.

After the 2 days i cleaned the filters, and replaced with new fiber. now my tanks are perfectly clear.

When I add sand, I wait for a lot to settle, usually a day, then do nearly 100% water change twice for smaller tanks. On larger tanks I just turn on the filter, but with a canister filter with lots of floss.

also the sand will not damage the filters, its too small of particals that it flows thru getting trapped in the fiber. just be sure to clean the filters once a month with like an old toothbrush.

Is that really just the stuff in Pillows? Any specific kind?

I have sand in my tank and it occasionally gets like this also. It shouldn't be harmful to the fish correct?

It's just poly fiber that isn't treated with chemicals, such as flame retardants. You can get it anywhere really, most people buy it from Walmart.

Usually, the water isn't this bad unless you just put sand in it...if you are seeing your water looking like this long after the initial introduction of sand, you may have a problem! :)

How long is "long"?

Nevermind, I got what you are saying.

As of right now, I have my filter on and it seems to just be filtering around the cloudiness... its pretty neat actually you can see the clouds of dust moving in the current... anyhow, none of it settled overnight so i figured it wouldn't hurt.
Thank you for your input everyone. I will try putting pillow floss in my filter as well as doing some water changes tonight. I appreciate it and I'll let you all know how it goes.

Also the danios seem to be doing great... still chasing each other around like maniacs, just in case anyone was wondering :D
