Hey, i have had this tank up for about 4 months now with 3 damsels, and a big yellow tang, for christmas a relatvie got me a clown trigger fish, and for food they gave me this bottle of garlic guard and pellets and told me to soak the food in the garlic first. The trigger hasnt been eating the food! and im getting scared its not gonna make it, it hides in the live rock and i thought it was dead, i did read they sleep in caves so im at a losse of ideas? What to do? where can i get crustaceans for it to eat or give me ideas please one what to do.

First thing is to tell well meaning relatives that they should give you gift certificates to your favorite LFS. Very few non-fish people know what is compatible and of an appropriate size, especially with salt water.

Second, I would guess that the trigger might be adapting to your tank. Depending on how long it was 'wrapped', it might be stressed from travel. I'd give it 1-2 days, and then try feeding krill, or cocktail shrimp.

You do know that thing will get huge, and likely take out your damsels? :(

How big is it? When I first got mine, he hid for about 2 hours and then he was out and looking for meal after meal after meal. Two and half years later I still have to be the stonger one and not feed him when he begs :D Smaller individuals may take a bit to get comfy in a new setting, especially if the damsels are giving it a hard time every now and then. To further entice it to feed, once he gets more settled in, try some fresh clam. I get mine a live one every week from Giant, and he also has alot of fresh oyster (Christmas leftovers) as well. Fresh meaty seafood is hard to resist if you're a clown trigger ;)

As OrionGirl said, be prepared for a monster on your hands once it gets comfortable. They are great lil' fishies, but they grow up!!

FishBait- How big is yours? Just curious. I can hardly wait for my little guy to grow up. He is currently in a 55 gallon (is only 2 inches) but have the 209G all set up for when he starts getting huge. About how much of a growth rate did you see out of yours? I have had mine for two months maybe three, and he has doubled in size. Got him as a 1 incher. Have heard several stories that they grow quick to 12 inches then start to slow down a bit till get to 20 inches. My little guy is starting to get color in his tail fin and is starting to loose the color around his nose. By far Clown Triggers are my most favorite marine fish..... wait...... of any fish that is :D. Gotta love 'em!

I'm just imagining someone wrapping a clown trigger and putting it under the tree... That's disturbing....... Hey Onion, long time no see =)

Mono:

I got mine at about 2" or so, and he did not take off like I've heard. I just getting close to the 6.5" mark, but has all the attitutude and destructiveness of an adult. I have white patches of rock all over my tank where he's bitten off chunks w/coralline all over.

Color wise he's got the yellow band thru the tail, and is just getting some of the yellow at the base of his dorsal/anal fins. All black on the top and the stripe on his face is now turquoise. Absolutely beeeeeeautiful!!!!! Aside from sharks, they're my favorite too ;)
