Clownfish Question

I wouldn't say it is common for that particular coral, but it isn't uncommon for clownfish to "adopt" a surrogate host in the place of an anemone, especially if it looks somewhat similar.
 
I agree with Amph. In my experience clowns will "play" with anything. Mine currently goes from an anchor coral to a candy cane to the xenia to the kenya tree to the toadstool.........................

but i do have an anemone in the tank. and not one of my three clown-fish play with it.
 
Unfortunately, that is just luck of the draw. They just happened to prefer something else, no matter how ironic that may seem.
