I have been reading how no one uses carbon unless they are removing meds/tannins. What do i have to do to take the leap of faith and leave my carbon in the can? I have been programed with the propaganda for years now from the good people at Tetra and want to break free from the machine!

I want to be free!!!!

I'll take the psychological approach to help free you. What is it that you think carbon is doing for your tank? What do you think will happen if you take it out? What are your deepest, darkest fears???????

i think its pulling bad stuff out of the water like they say. I think my deepest and darkest fear is pulling the carbon out and having the tank freak out.

I'm realy not unstable i just thought i would make it dramatic to get a quick reply. I do however want to free myself of carbon.

I'll help also. Take it out.

BTW..I use it on all my tanks..always have always will. I like what I don't see when I use it as compared to what I do see when I don't.

There are perfectly acceptable maintenance methods to prevent youfrom needing it all, except to remove meds.

Wait, lemme get this straight, you say to take it out though you refuse to?

my filter bags come with carbon in them, so i put it in there, but i don't replace the carbon every 2 weeks when it gets deactivated. my tank went just fine for about 6 months with no new carbon.

Don't worry, I got what you were doing. I don't think you're unstable.

But as for your tank "freaking out" it just won't happen. Plenty of people don't use carbon, with no tragedies. I don't use it and my tanks are clear and clean, my fish are healthy, my plants even happier. I do re-install the carbon when the tannins from my driftwood stain the water too much, but only for a day or 2, and nothing in the tank seems affected in the least when I take it out.

i am thinking about using peat extract to make my blue tetras happier andthoughts on complications w/ or w/o carbon?

what do you put in for a media?

Yes, every time I recommend using it when some one asks, we end up with a multitude of posts on why you don't need it. I think there are some benefits to it as noted in various articles, but it is not absolutely necessary. But it works for me and all my tanks.

Most people have a problem with finding phosphate free carbon and think it lasts for ever or at least a long time. I routinely change mine out every 5-7 days. The usual amount you find in the filter pads for the HOBs or in cartridges at the top of air lift tubes is far too little to be doing any real good.
