CO2 Can I use pub gas?

I am having difficulty finding an economical source of CO2, but I have been offered a pub cylinder and a publican has offered to swap it for one of his.

Is pub gas suitable for aquarium use?

like for beer? yes the co2 cylinder is the same.

Are you in the UK?

In the US, most get their CO2 cylinders re-filled at welding supply shops; CO2 for beverages and welding use is the same grade. Only the ultra-pure grade from laboratory use, etc., is different.

I imagine it's the same in the UK. If isn't safe for human consumption, surely it's OK for aquarium use, no?

As long as you don't ad that stuff j_chicago has in his avatar (all 101 proof of it), you'll be a-ok.

We have a little hangout with a couple kegerators, and we get out "pub gas" at the welding shop down the street (cylinder swap).

As said before, it's good gas for your aquarium needs.

beer stores sell CO2 cheap... or fire protection shops [they are harder to work with though because they usually deal with contractors]

NOTE: "pub gas" may be a nitrogen/CO2 mix. Locally called "beer gas", it preserves the head on beers like Guinness:

So...make sure it's the right stuff.

I wanted to try a keg of "Old Specked Hen", but the beer distributor told me I'd have to change from CO2 to beer gas, otherwise it wouldn't push right and would be too fizzy.
