the noise isnt that bad at all. i was more worried about it hurting the filter. if im not right next to the tank i dont even hear it.

you can place the limewood airstone further down in the tank but still below the intake. You are not going to hurt the filter, many have been doing that for years and their filters are still going strong. With diy you want maximum diffusion and the canister filter does that for you
