Hi I just got my first two peices of coral. They are a short tentacle plate and colt coral the plate seems to be doing just fine but the colt is really droopy. All of the pods are open but still very droopy. I have tested everything from ammonia through nitrate calcium temp ak/ph everything but the ph seems fine. My ph is around 8.6+, I know this is a problem but don't know how to get it down, I have a 54 corner with 400w MH and 64w PC actinic. Help help help!!!!

Help me keep this colt alive and drop my ph!!!! Or maybe this is normal behaviour for a colt he has been in my tank for a bout 3 days now.

When I first buy a colt coral, they can be pissy for several days and might not fully extend for a few weeks. Hang in there and see what happens - if it appears to start getting smaller, then I would be concerned.

I agree that the colt may just be moping.

The pH is very high, though. Are you sure your test kit is accurate? Unless you are adding buffer or kalkwasser, the salt mix should give you a pH around 8.1 to 8.2.

what could have caused the ph to get up that high in the first place I'm adding nothing but the regular salt mix, and what do you mean smaller he indeed does look smaller he will bloat up really big on some of the stalks and then deflate in like a matter of 10 minutes. Weird thing is, is that most of his pods are open, when the stalks collapse and get small the pods close and vise versa when he bloats up they open.

I wold check three things:

1. Is the test kit is it accurate (take a smple to your LFS to check)

2. If it is high then is the water you have used and are using for water changes got a high PH - what does your local authority give as the PH if you are using tap water. Again take a sample to be checked at the LFS

3. Is there something in the tank affecting the PH, Im no expert but Ive read somewhere that certain rocks or sand (cant remember which) leach into the water - this may be affecting the PH

Does the PH fluctuate ? (i.e. what is it first thing in the morning compared to last thing at night)
