Columbian Sharks?

Is it possible to successfully keep these fish in fresh water? Everything I've read has said no, but I was just curious if anyone had any personal experience . . .

Keeping a fish in conditions other than what is best for the them, will compromise their immune system, causing disease & early death. Nevermind, that they prefer SW as adults.

First things first I am new here.

What kind of setup do you have to sucessfully have columbian fish survive? I had 2 and they survived for about 2 weeks, changed the water 2/3 times in that time and added the water cleaner (ammonia and chlorine eliminator) each change. When the fish died they seemed to have loose scales? Or something white on their bodies as they swam around. I was going to guy new columbian sharks but decided on something else but they too just died today, same conditions. Could someone please help explain what I am doing wrong? I would like to get 2 more columbian what would I need to do to get a brackish water setup?

Columbian cats are large (1'+)fish that live in heavy brackish to full marine environments off the coast of Brasil. like many of the fish that "can" be kept in FW, they tend to be more easily overcome by diseases, which, from what you describe, sounds like what did them in. Also, with these larger predators, very good filtration is needed due to their eating habits as well as the fact that like most bottom feeders, they are heavily bodied, which leads to increased ammonia and waste production in the tank. they are also extremely active fish, and very rarely stop swimming, so a tank with a larger foot print and higher flow is appreciated. Note: in general, some of these catfish may fade in color as they mature.

hope this helps, B.W.

Maybe Ich? Did the white spots look like pieces of salt?

Coumbians are very active and entertaining, mine like to do flips in the bubbles from the air stone. They do get big but unfortunately this isn't very common due to premature deaths. I think you would probably need a 180gal minimum to house them in when they get full grown.

Mine is still a baby..but I must say..they are aggresive fish//I thought mine was nice but then I saw my bettas fins ripped and my guppies fins ripped too when I moved him out there were no more ripped fins whatsoever
