Good evening all. Okay I already have a 90 on an aquatic fundamentals stand and would like to get a 125 in the same room with a stand that matches the aquatic fundamentals stand. Problem is, aquatic fundamentals only makes stands large enough to hold a 90 gal (48x18 foot print). Now they do have a 65 gallon stand that has a 37x19 footprint, so combining two side by side would be able to fit a 74x19 footprint; which is of course enough for a 125 (72x18). Now, physically since each stand can hold 65 gallons and each stand would be holding half of the 125, im thinking that this might be able to work, but i dont know if it is risky at all. Just would like some feedback on whether or not someone has done this or if they think that it is physically possible. Here is a link to the 65 gallon stand id buy in a pair to combine side by side (http://www.petco.com/product/101395....aspx?CoreCat=MM_FishSupplies_StandsFurniture )

Personally, Its made of Fiberboard. Not actual pieces of strong lumber. In the center will be a gap. Fairly large gap at that where there will be zero vertical support when you butt the 2 stands together. If youve never seen a stand fail, Fall, tip or get crushed.... Let me tell you its an ugly sight. So is watching a tank burst do to unlevel or twisted issues. years ago I used to work for a really nice LFS and we also did out side service and I can tell you some horror stories and some serious expensive messes. Be smart on it. Get a QUALITY good stand that is meant for this size of tank. OR Build one or have one built of Solid construction. When you start dealing with bigger tanks, you should always go stronger and better and not cut any corners on things like a good stand. Figure if it should have an issue..... It could cost you all the fish, The tank, a new stand and a large mess... and anything else it happens to damage... you can do as you like. But IMHO as seeing these things happen before. I sure wouldnt. Maybe you could try and reinforce it. But Still its a chance.

Yea I was figuring it wasn't a good idea and you definitely game me good reason for it not being a good idea. Thanks for the reply.

Ok. I was given an aquarium a while back. It's dimensions are 96"L x 18"W x 24"H, for a volume of 180 gal. When I picked up the tank it was running and sitting on 2 36" x 18" angle iron stands, with a 2' gap in the middle. I asked the owner how long the tank had been there and his answer was "since I got it". On the bottom of the tank was a "sold" sticker from when he bought the tank. It caught my eye because it was very distinctive, and from a previous employer of mine, so I looked at it closely. It was dated 8/7/81.

I would consider him lucky. Personally me, to much to risk to not do it right. Cost to replace the tank, fish and clean up isn't worth it. Lots of things people cut corners on or skimpy. Sometimes they get lucky. I guess you always have to weigh out what its worth to you.

I would agree in so far as he was lucky that the material was up to the stresses he essentially unwittingly put on it. But it is a rather dramatic example of the stresses an aquarium can safely withstand if they are properly applied. Put that same tank on the highest quality stand in the world and have it a half inch off level and see how long it holds water.

Could it be done, YES. should it be done, NO.

Exactly.

There is alot of things that can be done that shouldnt be done. This is why things happen sometimes and we have awards in life like the Darwin awards Lol... But seriously. Your right. I hope no one thinks im saying any different because im not. I have strong feelings on doing things what I would call "smart way" of doing things. Over the years ive seen some people do some crazy things. Some worked out and most didnt. The funny thing is, the people it didnt work out for were the most surprised. Not the ones that it did.

And SubRosa your right. Ive seen people get the "Correct" stand set it up but have something just out of wack 3/8 of an inch and have big issues. Again it boils down to it being important to check everything possible and make it right.
