I'm planning to put my platy babies in with the mama, who is with a common goldfish which literally came back from the dead. Will the goldfish be stupid and eat the babies? :silly:

If it can fit them in its mouth, yes.

they have different needs as well. Goldfish is coldwater while platy's are tropical. Plus goldfish have a HUGE bioload

Golfish and Platies are not compatible for other reasons. Goldfish are coldwater fish, while platies are TROPICAL fish, meaning they need warmer water, best kept at around 76-79 degrees. Pretty mich, that means someone in your tank is prettyunhappy right now.. depending on what temp your tanks is at.

Also, it is not stupid for the goldfish to eat the babies.. that is natural for them to do so. Fish that fit it it's mouth is food...

Platies are far more comfortable at cool water temps than most people give them credit for. Central America/Mexico is subtropical, and once you factor in the high elevations many xiphophorus are found at, you have a fish that is entirely adapted to the temperature ranges one would normally keep goldfish at indoors. They are indeed incompatible, but not for lack of overlapping temperature requirements.

^ And goldfish live in 80*+ water during the summer in my pond. So I'm sure you can find a temp that can work for both ^_<
