I have a new tank. I have filled it up with my saltwater mixture and will be puting in my live sand shortly. The sand is supposed to be the kind that you can put in and then put the fish in without doing a cycle. I am not really comfortable so I am gonna wait a while before I get fish. I obvioulsy want to put fish in the tank. But I think I like the idea of live rock. But I thought I read somewhere that the fish would eat all the orgnisms that make the rock worth having. Is that true? I also see a lot of other neat things in pictures like anemones, toadstool leather corals, and ricordea florida. Can I put them in a tank with fish, how difficult is it and how involved is it?

All i can say is buy a book and then you will know, but for now don't put fish in, wait 2-3 months, LR is good and seed the sandbed with LS, there are fish that are reef compatible and do not harm corals, and corals can be hard to keep and salt water aquariums are very involved.

raidencmc,
the sand your talking about is called live-sand in my oppinion it is a waste of money. if it's been sitting around for more than two weeks anything that was live, probably isn't anymore.
you can seed regular sand for free from someone elses tank with a cup or two of their sand.
you will always have a cycle, it's the degree of cycle that livesand and liverock help you with.

if your going to have live rock now is the time to put it in, before you have fish and inverts.
Put your sand in, buy a good test kit and wait for the cycle.
It will take anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks depending.

get some books and research research research. using the internet helps but you will find a lot of misinformation.

If you want to keep corals I would educate yourself for quite awhile ( months, years).
go slow, nothing good ever happens fast in a Reef tank

have fun :thm:
