Hi, I have a 20 gallon long tank with a breeding pair of marigold swordtails. I was wondering wether or not a Betta would be suitable because i wanted to brighten the tank up a bit. Is the Betta gonna harass the swordtails or vice versa. I dont wanna get it if it will. Also, im not worried about the fry, I ususally get the female into a breeder trap before she ha the fry

Hi,

It really depends if you get a 'peaceful' betta or a 'mean' betta. You can't really tell what they are intill you put them in your tank, which doesn't help that much. If I had to make a guess, I would say that the betta wouldn't bother the Swordtails.

If you go to your LFS and take a betta in its little dinky cup over to a tank full of swordtails... close enough that they'll notice each other and the betta is calm, you might be able to do it. Buy the betta (along with one of dem cheap feeder goldfish) and put them in a bowl together for a little while (I know it's wrong, but for JUST a little while) and if the betta is fine, then it will be ok with the swordtails. I know its crazy... but... I'm 99% sure.

k im gonna try because id really like a nice fish to brighten up my aquarium and the bettas come in such beautiful colors

Yay! It is a good thing to do... boy I have the wildest mind.

I went to the store to day and picked up a Betta and a goldfish. I know it isnt right but i did it anyway. I put the goldfish in the Bettas little bowl. Nothing happened and I was so happy. So i put the betta into my 20 gallon and i never saw a Betta move so much, the fish was swimming around so fast it was great. Yeah and i fed the goldfish to my turtle.. O well.
