I was cleaning the tank out today and usually the fish swim away from my hand especially the compressiceps they are kinda timid compared to some of the others. Well today one of the compressiceps bit me! It didn't let go right away either, I pulled my hand about 8 inches closer to the surface before it let get. I have 4 of them, I think they are gold head if I remember correctly or if that's even an option. lol.
It's been hanging out in front of a big piece of lace rock and I've noticed it chasing the other fish away from that area. I grabbed a flashlight and shined into a cavity on the lace rock and there are a bunch of eggs in there. My girfreind estimates 50 but I'm not sure. Sometimes the eggs move by themselves. Sometimes the compressiscep will put its head all the way into the cavity with the eggs. What is she doing? She's not eating them is she? I'd like to raise the fry. I already have 2 fry tanks going, I really don't want a third but my only other choice is mix them with 2 month and 1 month old blue ahlis, I'm guessing that's probably not a good idea. Just looking for some suggestions here. Should I wait until they are free swimming then tried to net them out? I hope the mom isn't / doesn't eat them. I could grab the hole piece of lace rock out of there with the eggs attached too but then I don't know what I'd do. I got these compressisceps in July of 07, by that time they were already full grown so I have no idea how old they are. This is the first time since I've had them that they've laid eggs. Or there was possibley one other time but I didnt net the fry out, I'm not actually for sure what those were. What does everyone think?

Last time I did that I had no survivors. So net them out when they are free swiming I guess? Thats what I did with my neolamprogous leipiui (I know thats not close on spelling) and I was able to net 9 of them, I did not see any others. That was this January and I still have all 9. I'm thining of putting 2 of those back in the big tank and maybe see if I can see the remaining 7.

Leave em alone til they are free swimming mom needs to pop in and check on them and fan or squirt water over the eggs to prevent fungus.. once free swimming move them to another tank or buy one of those net breeders and hang inside the main tank til they have enough size to them so you can place them with other fry..

Thanks for the suggestions. I have not messed with them at all. They are swimming but have not came out of their little cave yet. Then I noticed another compressiceps hainging out on a piece of lace rock at the other end for days. Wll I looked around and this one has swimming fry too!
And I also just noticed that I have 2 female blue ahlis that are holding again. It's the 4th time for the one and first time for the other. I've kept all the previous fry but I'm up to like 70 of them, I don't think I can save anymore.

Fish food..

Thats what I'm thinking for the fry that the 2 are holding right now. There are just way to many in my fry tank right now. I'm not sure if a LFS will take them? If they'd give me like a buck a piece store credit I'd cash in like 70 three quarters of an inch ahlis toward a new filter set up. ha ha.

Anyway I have 42 compressicep fry in a net inside the tank right now. There are still others in the tank and that was just from one compressiceps, I still have the other garding some. The mother of the fry we took today just swam away but the other one is crazy and attacks as soon as your hand hits the water. The fry are coming out of their cave and quickly go back in.

I pulled out 80+ from my calvus last night. This is the third or fourth time I've tried to save some. I've never been successful. Here's what I've tried - first time I tried crushed NLS pellets. I had one survive for several week however my eels tipped his breeder net and either he went into a fluval or he went into a mouth. Next I tried crushed brine shrimp flakes but had no luck. The third time I tried crushed omega one flakes and cyclopeze. I thought this would fail as the flakes are not very crushable but thought it was worth a try. I am now trying hard boiled egg yolk. A buddy of mine was over to see how I built my reef and I was telling him how I am having trouble with these calvus fry. He said when he was raising bettas he used hardboiled egg yolk. I had never heard of that before but have done searches on it and found other people do use this method. Just a thought in case you don't have microworms on hand.
