Hi can anyone please tell me, is it true that every time you do a water change it starts the cycle again?

I have read this on another forum, and i am now confused.:help:

i'd avoid the "other" forum since apparently they don't know very much about aquatic biology. the bacteria which convert ammonia and nitrite are located in your filter .. doing water changes has absolutely no negative impact this aspect of your aquarium.

Thank you for your reply liv2padl.
I will carry on doing my water changes with ease.

The only time you'll re-cycle your tank is if you empty out ALL the water and force your filters and substrate to kick into action mode to stabilize the sterile water.

 ?

Nitrifying bacteria rests in your filters and substrate. Also in the water. If you remove all of the water, there is a chance that it will drastically damage or even kill off this bacteria. Adding completely new water after emptying the tank will force whatever is left from your filters and substrate to re-cycle the new water. Causing the cloudy bacteria bloom, ammonia - nitrite - nitrate fiasco all over again.

Which is why weekly partial water changes are the perfect method of maintaining a healthy equilibrium.

So, basically, the people on the other thread were only right in regard to the most drastic example of a "water-change", meaning a COMPLETE water change, rather than the correct partial water change.

I have done a bunch of 100% water changes (moving to a new place) in multiple, and not ever had to recycle any of my tanks.

Stabilize the water...? Provided the tenp is okay, conditioner is used when required, and the water is basically the same general characteristics, you could change constantly, with no ill effects.
