Constipated. Need advice quick! Please post here again

Oh I am so sorry, that is very sad. I know my last betta died suddenly too .. and I took very good care of him. I hope that you don't let this keep you from getting another one. They are great fish and loads of fun as you know. Next time when you go to the store to pick a new betta make sure you look him all over for illness. See if you can get him to flare his fins to look for rips or holes in them. A betta with bubbles in the water is a happy betta. I try to pick a betta that is feisty.

Oh no.. I'm really sorry to hear that!

It sounds like dropsy, actually, and not constipation. Dropsy symptoms include swelling and eventually "pineconing" (scales sticking up).

I wish you all the best with your future fish, and hope that this doesn't deter you from getting another!

Sorry to hear about you betta. Don't let that stop you enjoying another one. Take the advice the others gave you and get one that is feisty and undamaged.

Again sorry about you loss.

Geez guys! I've never heard of a fish swimming to salt water to correct problems from bloat or constipation!
And if it was constipation..why send the poor thing to a buffet? I can't believe all the suggested food on this subject.
She never once mentioned a sure diagnosis, so why make her fish a guinnea pig for your personal amusement?
Fish live for many days without food. If a fish is constipated it usually passes it after a few days. If not, it is more than likely bloat...from dirty water and too much food.

I would stay away from betta pellets and frog and tadpole bites. Every time I put this food in my tanks I have some sort of fish get the bloat and die. My frogs and fish stay healthy with normal tropical foods with occasional bloodworms and shrimp pellets. I have a hunch that betta and frog bites are a little more like the hot dog/bologna qualities of the food world.

Betta bites have been out on the market long before the improved foods of today.

just so you know for future reference if the scales are sticking out then its dropsy. Dropsy is something of symptom before death. The bloating when not caused by constipation is due to internal organ failure. From what I understand is it is nearly impossible to treat. Anytime you see a bloated fish I would first remove that fish and treat in a hospital tank with antibiotics for an internal bacterial infection as well as epsom salts for constipation.
Sorry about your fish.

I don't think that is a fair assessment. The suggestion was constipation and people were doing their best to help, and were eager to do so. I don't think anyone was doing so for personal amusement. No advice is perfect.

Either way, it sounds like there was probably nothing we could have done. The scales sticking up seems a sure indicator of dropsy, and as FishyMatty said, there's basically nothing you can do as that is near the end.

captmicha, I hope you will consider another fish, and don't get deterred by your loss.

terror spawnin is right, though, do watch the foods you feed. As an example, I remember ordering some of that aquadine food awhile back, when it was offered as a free sample. It caused a tremendous bloat problem in my fish (even when pre-soaked). Won't try that stuff again.... :silly:
