I have a tank that has columnaris in it. It has been set up a while, and since these fish are known carriers to this disease, I have decided to destroy them and take the tank down for sterilization so as to use it for a QT tank.

My question is, I have some malaysian driftwood in this tank. I would like to know the best way to clean it. The two options I have come up with are, A) give it a good scrubbing in a solution of bleach water, let it sit over night then soak in water with extra dechlor, B) let it dry completely out.

Option A sounds the best to me atm, what do y'all think?

With birds you're supposed to bake their perches once a month to sterilize them. Maybe you could dry out the wood and try baking it for a while?

Why are you "destroying" a bunch of fish? It makes no sense....Just treat them properly. Guppies can be "carriers" of columnaris, but you don't see me killing all my fish.

And if we did this to humans people would have our heads. IMO just do what you can for them and if they die they die but really all fish can carry disease but we don't try to kill them all.

I have tried maracyn, maracyn 2, as well as several other antibiotics. Why am I destroying them. Because they are infectious and cannot be put in any other tank, no other tank mates will go with them, any stressor causes a flare up. I have had these wild caught guppies for quite a while and managed them as such with the disease. The time has come that they are euthanized because of the risk of contamination to my other 7 tanks. I do view the health of the other 100 plus healthy fish to be of more concern than the continuous isolation qt of these few sick fish. If they were in the wild, they would already be dead.

With that being said, being a fish hobbiest for 15 plus years, while I in no way profess to know everything, I am well aware of the ins and outs of disease, how to treat as well as how to prevent it. In other words, while I am glad the everyone is concerned about the fish that I am choosing to euthanize, I am asking that this thread not be taken off topic with judgmental opinions.

Thanks for the responses to the actual thread topic. Please do not derail this thread any further.

How anyone deals with Columnaris, is their choice.
for those that don't understand the implications this particular bacteria carries.. i suggest you study further.

the risk of spreading this is very high..often the best measure is to eliminate the stock, sterilize the equiptment and start over.

I would soak the wood in a bleach solution for some time. then soak in clean water. chlorine is actually not very stable and will dissipate over time.

hang in there blue:thm:
