Convert UGF to RUGF

Stias', I'm sure you're right saying that the bottom of the Penguin and my AquaClear 802 must both be the same size as a standard uplift tube. But, looking at the instructions on that Web site, to use the Penguin for RUGF, the sponge will cover that opening in my powerhead. What I'm not sure about is the adapter that will then connect the output of the powerhead to the uplift tube (which maybe I should now call a downdraft tube?) - are all powerhead exhaust tubes a standard size?

Or am I totally missing something?

Well, THAT was a quick reply!

No, all powerhead outputs are nowhere near the same size and configuration.
Thanks, RTR, that's what I thought. What I need to do is find an LFS that has both an AquaClear 802 and the Penguin reverse flow kit. If they let me open both boxes and compare sizes, and one thing doesn't fit the other, maybe seeing them together in my hand will inspire me to rig up some kind of adapter.

Sorry, I thought you had the part from the pump to the Under Gravel tube figured out, seeing as how you stated they were reversable in your first post. All I thought you were asking was if there was a black sponge to act as a prefilter (which there is). Hope you figure it out.

I suspect a big issue will be whether or not the Penguin adapter will support the 802 even if they fit one another. The 802 is much larger and heavier than the Penguin 1140 which I use most for this application.

Since the 802 is reversible, what I'd like to do is leave it sitting in place on the UGF's riser tube. When I can figure out how I can attach a filter to the 802's exhaust tube, I'll reverse the flow.

I never expected this thread to get so long! :) Thanks for all the replies.

No, I wasn't aware of that. I never thought to look into it. I now see it's 175 gph vs 400. One reason I liked the 802 was its ability to reverse, since I thought I might try RUGF one day. Oh well, maybe I'll just break down and buy new Penguin 1140s with reverse flow kits, since you've had good experiences with them. I can keep at least one of the 802s to keep the surface agitated. Thanks, RTR!
