Converting Carbon Filter to Bio

I just bought a 55-gallon tank that came with a Whisper 20. Since I want to try planting this time around, I want to take out the carbon media and replace it with a cut-up sponge that can hold bacteria.

The idea is to be able to replace/clean a sponge section from the bottom and add a new one to the top as I do a partial water change.

I know I'll need another filter for a tank this size but this seemed like a good chance to experiment since the filter came with the tank and I have no use for activated carbon.

thoughts? comments?

They seem to be little bags of carbon that sit inside the filter vertically hanging from a rod at the top.

I could do that but then changing them would mean starting over from scratch with the bacteria every time.

For my HOB filters I use a bio bag with carbon and a fluval filter sponge cut to fit and stuffed in front of the bio bag. It works great.

cut a piece of the old filter when its time to change that way u keep some bacteria

i cut up a sump filter block just small enough to fit and put it on both sides of my whisper 30/60. works well and i don't have to replace it. rinse and squeeze in the bucket and replace. one time purchases makes spending the couple dollars up front a great bargain in the long run.

here's a 2am pic for you.
