Converting saltwater filter to freshwater

I found a Eheim 2227 filter on Craigslist ($75, 2-3 years old, works, and he's willing to meet me halfway, giving me only a 20ish min drive) that's been running on saltwater. Both chambers currently have bioballs in them.

What steps do I need to take to make it usable for fresh? I'm thinking rinse everything pretty thoroughly, probably run vinegar and/or bleach to disinfect (since salty bacteria aren't going to want to live in fresh anyway), rinse again, and let it hang out on my existing freshwater tank (38gal) for a couple or three weeks before setting up the 55ish tank that I'm getting it for.

And finally, should I stick with the media that's in it, or change it out for something else?

I think your thoughts are fine for clean up.

So I get it home, and as I walk in the door, I manage to get the intake tube caught on something, and it broke *sigh* Trying to figure out where I can get a replacement (or I might just take the pieces to Ace or something and see if I can't find something of a similar size that would fit... might be cheaper). But I can still work on cleaning the rest of it in the mean time...
