hi, i am running a 29 gallon brackish tank housing puffers and a goby. i know my green spot will later require full marine for happiness and health. now to the point. i need to convert it.

my current specs are:
i have a 29 gallon; 18"=h x 29"=w x 12"=l/d
2 x 40w "aquarium light"
1 hygrometer/thermomiter
2 h.o.b. filters pushing 200 g.p.h. each = 400 g.p.h. (3 stage type (mech.,
chem., bio.)
40 lbs. substrate; 1/2 live sand x 1/2 standard marine sand (wich i know will "grow" in time)
1 heater rated up to 50 gallon; capable of 70 - 85 deg. f. on my tank.
1 areator for 50 gallon w/ 2 outlet ports (are coupled over into 1 line pushing small stone on decor)
1 large decor for covering heater w/ small vent holes for circulation
1 medium decor with small air stone
2 small plastic plants
few small stones

for now i have 1 green spot (would have 3 but have had unfortunate losses), 2 figure eights, and 1 dragon fish (goby)
i maintane the water at 78 deg. f. at s.g. of 1.012

in this process the goby and figure eights will be left in a brackish setup.
i will be adding other puffers of same size when avallable... porcupine, dog face, green spot.
i know my size is small for these at this time, but keep in mind this is long term plan and not doing without tank upgrades...

basically i need to know if i NEED items such as protein skimmer and power head for improved circulation, filtration. or anything else that may be REQUIRED. thank you.

sounds like your setup is the same as mine. i'm going to marine myself for my GSP, i woud definetely get some powerheads. i have a penguin 660 that i'm not real happy with. i would like to go to a maxi-jet powerhead for $16.99 model 1200 (295gph) from www.drfostersmith.com. they also have the emperor 400 which would go great with your setup on sale for like 37 bucks and it's over $80 in the lfs and petsmart. this would cut down on the amount of b.o.t. filters that you have to have and they are supposed to kick butt. but yes definetely need some current running through there. i'm getting ready to run another powerhead too. you don't want any place on the tank to have sitting water. i would definetely NOT run the airpumps anymore unless it's just for a decoration (like my aligator head bubbler) they just don't move near the amount of water as you want.
