I am going to convert my 10 gal (pair of kribs - hoping to breed and two corys) from gravel to sand this weekend. This will be my first tank with sand (other 4 tanks have gravel). I have purchased pool filter sand from a pool company in town. Just wondering how deep the sand should be in the tank and if the fish can be added as soon as the sand has settled (I will wash the sand first). The tank is currently planted with my crypts, anubais and java fern. Should anything be added to the sand which would benefit the plants?? Is it a good idea to have some trumpet snails in the tank to sift the sand around?? Thanks in advance

I have a mixture of fluorite and pool filter sand in both my tanks now, and the plants seem to do well. I have maybe 1.5 to 2 inches in depth of both. My opinion is that I can sift stuff around more and avoid anerobic pockets if it's not so thick. Snails are good, I have quite a variety.

I converted 2 of my tanks to silica sand 2 months ago, after 1 and half months i converted back to grave. The first reason was my plants where growing at a slower pace. The other reason was the upkeep, it was always dirty, covered in mater, even with daily syfoning it was still dirty. Unless you are going to be using a dark sand, I recomend you steer clear.
