hey guys, i've had my convicts in my 30 gallon for about 18 hrs. a male and a female.... at first no aggression was shown. but now the larger male is charging the female... it doesn't seem to be biting her, but i can't really tell...

Secondly after introducing the fish to the tank, they both seemed to loose some of their color... could this be because of the stress of a new tank? what can i do if this is a problem? i heard i can feed vegetables? is this true?
 
convicts are cool fish I'm glad you got them.

the colors will fade, brighten, darken on various different days. My convicts stripes and colors would seem to change at random. The longer they are in your tank and comfortable the better the colors will usually become over time. It shouldn't be anything to worry about.

This is the natural aggression of cichlids. like I said you will always see some level of aggressive (chasing, rubbing, pecking) behavior. As long as your male isn't obviously beating her into submission (near death), they will learn to live together.

convicts will eat just about anything if healthy. pellets, flakes, wafers, brine shrimp, bloodworms, you name it. I bet they would eat vegies as well, I'm sure it couldn't hurt. who knows. they are active eaters for sure.
 
they are really cool fish I'll look forward to them mating i think... not too sure what to expect....

cichlids are def cool partly because of the unknown aggression factors. some are mean, some are relaxed, some used to be nice and are now mean. its interesting to watch these behaviors change and adapt.

I recommend doing a search for convict breeding. you'll find a ton of information to give you more of an idea of what to expect.
 
i heard that if you let the fry grow up the papa will just eat them... HOW RUDE!
 
its obviously not rude, just kinda funny to think about, he protects them so much then eats them... just funny thats all.
 
If you have enough hiding places you will have more baby cons than you can handle. They are fast little guys and most will survive. I have to keep my tank overstocked so they don't breed. Had my share of hundreds of cons..lol.
