I have had a female convict in my 55 gal and noticed yesterday she was laying eggs, so decided to get a male convict tonight to see what happens. I believe I got a male - it has a longer dorsal fin and is not as brillant in coloration. Anyway does it take a while for them to "hook up" - I put him in and is just getting chased by everyone right now (even female cichlid). Just wondering if there's anything to do, i've never had fish breed before.

Fish pairing off is never a sure thing... however if it is going to happen I would bet that it would be shortly after the initial "greeting" that you are experiencing is over.
Have you removed the eggs (or have they been ate?) the female laid earlier? If not do so... they will just rot and complicate any future relationship between the convicts as the female will be more concerned with protecting the infertile than getting friendly with the new tankmate.
