We did not use a container. The ice floated and we assumed the cold coming off of it sank towards the bottom and as it did the currents in the tank mixed it in pretty fast. we never found any dead fish. so I would assume it worked fine. I am not sure having it a bottle is much different in terms of cooling coming off the ice itself v.s. the ice inside a bottle.
This was in the early 1970s and soda still came in glass bottles. Other plastic fodd containers existed and that is what we made the giant ice cubes in.
