Hi, does anyone have any ideas for cooling down the temperature in a tank? I have no heaters running and my tanks are not in a sunny location, but we are having a real hot streak, on top of the high humidity we have in Ohio and the water keeps climbing to 80 no matter how many times I do a pwc. Room temperature here is closer to 90 with curtains drawn and windows closed to keep the heat out. I'd really appreciate any ideas. I just don't want my little guys and girls to cook. Thanks :)

I think there is a VERY good article writtne on this topic in the FW article section.

I will find it in a sec. Essentially, there are a few things that can be done rather easily --

1. Freeze water bottles and float them
2. Place a fan over the water surface
3. Remove the top/lid
4. Turn the lights off (they give off a LOT of heat)
5. Do a PWC

There are more...give me a minute ;)

Hmm, I thought there was another article (I've not read this one), but it's on the topic! http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52858

drop in a few ice cubes?

for the experts: is this a bad idea?

I don't like the ice-cubes b/c this uses the chlorinated tap water...Put them in water-tight bag, and yes, this would work nicely ;)

I actually thought about the bagged ice cubes but was afraid it would cool things too rapidly. I did a search on cooling the tank, but it took me to a search engine site out of aquaria central. I have been doing pwc (a family emergency has made it difficult to do as often as I would like this week) but I usually let my water sit and get to room temperature anyway so I have been mixing the room temperature with tap to cool it a little. I didn't know if adding straight tap (treated) would cool things down too quickly and put my little ones into shock. I have been leaving my lights off as much as possible, and fans are as helpful as a person blowing on a housefire! One of these days I WILL have air conditioning and join the world! lol. Thanks for any ideas! I don't know how I'd get by with out all of your advice!

CT, thanks for finding the article, it is very helpful! Thank you all for the quick response, I really appreciate it!

i don't think the amount of chlorine in a tray of ice cubes would be a problem, as it probably gasses off during the time it is in the freezer, before they water freezes.

or you could just make ice cubes with treated water. . . .

You could buy one of those little portable A/C units for that room also. All the work you will save yourself would be worth the money to me.
