im converting my 20 gallon sw to a fw tank. My heater from the sw tank was covered in coraline algea. i tried scraping it off, and got most of it off, except for a few spots. is that ok? will it have any effects on my fw tank. there is also a few spots of green saltwater algea in the filter intake tube, is that ok to have?

dip it in bleach and then RINSE THROUGHLY, this will kill the algea and make it safe, but remember to rinse it throughly

I am not sure, I would just dip it to be safe I dont know what it would do to the FW tank

would bleach used for cleaning clothes work? and when this heater is placed in water, some water goes in it. how would i get the bleach out that goes inside the heater.

btw, thanks for the help

get a new heater---if water gets in it's cracked and that could lead to a dangerous situation for your fish and you.

any type of bleach would work. No water or bleach should go into the heater, If it does you need a new heater...unless it's made for that sort of thing and that would be news to me, I would dip it and rinse it and let it soak in some water overnight if it's not submersible dont soak the whole thing mind you, My heater is a submercible one though...just dip the affected part in bleach and rinse...that should work.

i have a stealth 100 watt heater, and when i put it in water, a few bubbles come out the top where the dial is. at least i think, i havent put it in water for a while, so mayb its something diff.

I don't think the coralline algea would do that much to your water. Coralline uses Ca if I'm not mistaken, so 1) it wouldn't survive or 2) it may slightly increase your water hardness. I doubt it will have any serious negative side-effects.

BUT, if you have any doubts about your heater, buy a new one. It's not worth risking a whole tank for one faulty heater.
