I got some new Cory's and I was wondering if they are air breathers. I have noticed that every once and awhile they swim to the top and looks like they take a gulp of air. Are they taking gulps of air or what?

This is perfectly normal. Cory's are able to breath air from outside the tank and will occasionally come up for a gulp.

Cories will go to the surface to gulp air to help aid in digestion. If they do it too often or stay near the surface though, then you might have a problem, otherwise nothing to worry about. :)

Perfectly normal. Many of my cories don't do it but my albino is always doing it. If you see them with a swollen belly it is usually due to a swalloed air bubble. They digest this in their gut. If the swollen belly doesn't go away it could be another problem.

it is even more amusing when they "exhale" at the surface. scared me to death. (startled me)...sounded like an underwater fart.

I've heard that it actually -is- an underwater fart. I dunno if it's tru though.

i dont' either, but yesterday it certainly looked like that large air bubble came from the rear while kirby was on the bottom!

Corydoras catfish store air in their guts, this allows them to survive in extremely polluted water.
I got this from a book :)

I'm not sure how true it is about surviving in polluted water, but it is used to aid digestion like I originally said. ;)
