Hi I'm new here and to herps also :)

anyway I came across some thing that I thought I could turn into a Viv for cresties but haveing little luck and how to do this...the dimensions are 18 1/4"L x 15 1/2"W x 40 1/2"H which I think equals to about 50 "gallons"
some pics

sorry for bluriness... Ive removed the insides so now its just a big space inside oh and onone side there is a glass door just cant see it in the pic lol

any ideas appreaciated thanks

Cresties need humidity, so wood isn't always the best option. I prefer screen or aquariums all together for cresties. That looks to me like a stereo cabinet? You could put wood on t he back and seal up the front, but like I said, I wouldn't want to risk the wood rotting due to the water in the tank. You need a humidity around 70 for them.

No, I dont think that would make a good vivarium. The wood would rot due to the humidity cresties need.

Also, volume-wise, your tank would be fine for cresties, HOWEVER, most herps appreciate more ground space vs. tank height.

Id just keep it as a regular cabinet. Its just not suitable to keep any animals in.

thanks darkcirca and legendaryfrog I guess I wont use it as a viv...

glad a tank that size would be good for cresties I think it could house about 4 no? 20 gallon for 1 and extra 10gallon for each extra if Im right (correct me if not)

legendaryfrog yes I understand reptiles like floor space more than height except cresties since I understand they are arboral Ive been researching leo's, cresties, and firebellytoads's for my first reptile and both the leo and firebelly's would perfer floor space over height leo with all land and fire belly with some land but mostly water.

Anyway I'd like to start with cresties since I have vertical space for now and dont have to handle crickets as much :) so by anychance can I use plexiglass? about 1/4 thickness?

thanks

20 gallons plus 10 gallons for each extra cresty is fine.

I'm a little confused as to what you're asking though....Do you plan on using that cabinet and lining it with plexiglass? ~or~ are you build a completely new enclosure?

If you're building a new enclosure, than 1/4" plexiglass is fine, assuming there won't be any water.

well now im planning on making it just plexiglass no cabinet. because it would be nice to see the cresties from any angle not just the front.

the water feature would be a water fall. I would make a foam background for it have it built into the foam and have the water land in a contained, shallow, and small body of water

and also the plexi will be sealed with silicone that is used in aquarium tanks

what would the difference be if I just line it with plexi? But now that I think about it visually a plexi tank would look alot better than the cabinet lol

Crested Geckos are arboreal and should be given close to 2 feet of height in a tank.

Now that said, crested geckos eat crickets, and really enjoy them. Some won't take the Crested Gecko Diet, so dusting crickets in a must. Yes some do eat baby food. I've had some luck with this, but it means putting it on his nose for him to lick it off. Mine also doesn't touch real fruit. He loves his crickets though. Will spend forever chasing them around. Be ready to handle crickets, because they should be fed to a crested gecko.

1/4" should be fine. I thought about doing stuff like that, but buying one of those exo-terra cages might just be a lot easier. reptilesupply.com sells them cheaper too I believe.

Waterfalls are great, but they break, all the time, and need to be cleaned constantly. I just stick with misting as it is less time consuming. Some people put one of those small containers you get for a hermit crab at the beach and put a bubbler in it. This keeps the humidity up, and doesn't allow for the gecko to get in.

well the tank will be almost 4ft 46" to be exact in height I want them to have plenty of space to climb and do what they want.

for diet I was actually hoping to be able to use both the CGD as a staple 2 times a week and gutloaded crickets 1 times a week would this be okay? But this is if they take the CGD if not I have no problems handling and feeding crickets

just went and measured I have enough room to make the tank 24"L x 18"W x 46" H itll most likley be smaller but only by a couple of inches

the reason I wan to build it becasue I think for that size tank it would be cheaper to make lol and anyway Im good with my hands and this would help learn somethings for when I build my little brother's tank for Firebellys with the filtration built to be easy to clean and wont even have to open the tank to do it...(thats the plan anyway)

Yea building is always better, then you get what you want too. That is a good height, especially if you are having multiple ones. Some might take CGD, some don't, goodluck with that one. Fruit (banana's, peaches, guava, etc) are good, as well as baby food of this variety. You can try that as well.

Any idea what you plan to purchase, adults or babies? Adults might be better if you plan to have multiple as you need to be able to sex them to determine what you have. I purchased a baby so now I am waiting until the sex is determined.

hmmm what does it mean to be able to sex them? Ive been to breeder sites and they sell babies and sexed adults but never asked lol. But i wanted babies so that I can see them grow up and see them change only problem with that is that I would hve to indroduce them one by one and If I get a male I have to get another tank for it. And sexed females cost a pretty penny lol but I guess I wont mind.

Also I have another question can I put live plants in there? how would this affect the environment for the crestie? and for the building of the tank should I make the door screen mesh? or just the top?
