Couple loach questions

I'm moving my FW to the 20L (24G is going reef) and I've got a few questions about my loaches.

Is an RUGF fine with khulis?
What can I cover my AC50 input with to protect them?
Do I need egg crate or something over the tank to prevent escape?

RUGF? (Pardon my density)

I would prefer to operate with sponge filters when keeping kuhlis. They can easily slip in intakes. A 20g can support 6-8 of these fish and must be provided with several thickets of plants for cover.:)

So I can basically cut a space into the filter sponge and slip it over the intake? If doing this will it need regular changing along with the one in the filter? Does it REPLACE the one in the filter? I think I'm overthinking this, but...

Is a lid really necessary? If som what to do with the area for the filter flow?

A lid will be necessary to prevent the fish from jumping out of the tank although I have to admit my tanks are open-topped but with plenty of cover.:grinyes: Increase the surface agitation if tank must be enclosed. The sponge covering the intake can be cleaned instead of changing. I only wrapped it up with a rubber band or string although rubber band must be replaced every few weeks as it disintegrates.

I use an Aqua Clear filter sponge over the intake until the fish are too big. It was sized for a AC 70 cut into a piece about 1.5x1.5x 3 inches to fit a whisper intake. Then with a serrated knife I cut an X not quite through the small end. It just slides off to clean it, I don't need rubber bands to hold it on. I still use all the regular filter media.

I left the water level down a couple inches for a month or 2 so the fish could learn the tank without jumping. No matter how covered you think the tank is, they can find a way out if they want, egg crate has too big of holes.

Ditto. You can buy a replacement sponge for a mag drive water pump that fits perfectly over the intake. IMO there is no reason to remove the sponge when they get bigger. I have many AC filters operating this way.

Got it on the filter, easy to deal with :-)

With covering the tank, I'm still kinda heasitant because of heat (though I don't KNOW that I'll have a heat problem) and because my khulis haven't tried to go all the way up in the 'Pod. When they "dance" they do go most of the way, but they wouldn't bump the lights. Right now I've just got a cheapo light and hood on there, but there's a big area removed for the filter. Will this be all right?

Second, just to update, I'm bagging the RUGF idea. For now. I just don't want to spend extra money right now. Maybe in the future.
