If I cover the filter intake of my filter with a media bag, how can it filter out mechanically?

I mean, I decreases the suction, but what about filter quality? Wouldn't the waste and etc. just stick to the walls of the media bag (instead of into the filter)?

yes.

well, what alot of people do is place a foam or sponge around the intake pipe. this way it traps mos tof the debris before it reaches the filter pads and media. like, i own an eheim 2042 power filter and in the manual they recommend using a sponge (theirs of cours) over the intake.

I was having issues with my snails getting stuck in the filter. I put one of the Marineland Eclipse things over the intake and the issue is gone.

Still get the mechanical filtration though. This probably wouldn't work with shrimp, but it works just fine for the snails.

Filters suck in...
Media bags over intake...
Debris stick to Media bag...
If Media bags are supposed to keep shrimp from getting sucked up...
Wouldn't shrimp just stick to the Media bag if the suction power was strong enough to suck them up in the first place?

No. The suction on most filters isn't that strong if you have a plastic intake strainer over the intake and a media bag over that. And also, a healthy shrimp will be able to walk off of the media bag. I see my Amano Shrimp hang out over the intake of my filters all the time, so I know they don't get sucked in.

Shrimp seem to really enjoy grazing on the intake cover, snails as well. This just makes it so they cannot get pulled into the filter.
