I posted a wanted ad on craigslist for 20L-30G aquariums and one of the replys was a 29 gallon with everything but a stand for 25 bucks. When I picked it up it was an eclipse and he said one of the lights in the one lid didn't work and he forgot which one and he gave me both lids. I am thinking it could only be a wiring, transformer or starter problem. I have an extra starter that should fit in that lid anyways. The tank had some blue paint on the back (like in fish stores) and there was a lot of salt on it. So I am planning to get it cleaned up and set up before new years.

I am thinking of making a dresser/stand or just hunting down a used one that could hold up the tank, because I know for sure that my current one cannot.

Here are some pictures, and I will be posting more pictures (slowly but surely) as I progress and when it is finally setup.

PS. Does anybody have any ideas about how to remove blue paint from the back of fish tanks? So far I have been spraying windex on it and letting it soak then scraping it off slowly with my finger nails. Is there any more efficiant ways to do this?

Edit: All my picture uploads are failing right now so it looks like I need to wait

Without a warm sunny day to warm up the glass evenly which makes it soft for a razor blade, you may try some solvent like WD-40 sprayed into a rag fist so not to smell up the house or get it inside the tank. Just rub it on and blade it off.

Nice find, another cheap ide for a make shift strong stand are two matching bedside lamp tables usually cheap on CL. Spread matching stands apart to the desired length of the tank, place a 3/4 inch plywood board from the remnant pile at Lowes or HD and they will cut it free, all for a few bucks. If the stands have drawers you have a redy made cabinet with a space in the middle for your filter or sump.

Nice find...if a glass tank, I find a razor blade works great.

Just use a razor blade. It will be the least effort. You may get a few scratches but if you plan to put a background on anyway, they wont show up.

I ended up using a box cutter/razor blade. At first I pulled out the blade all the way and had it bent at a little angle and scraped it sideways. That worked good until the blade snapped. Luckily for me it snapped at the very end when it was just the minor details I needed to clean so it worked even easier. It doesn't look like there are any scratches.

When I get the rest of it cleaned up, I will post some more pictures.

Fill the tank with warm water and then use a heat gun, filling with water is a must however to avoid cracking......the water will keep the glass cool. Then use a stiff PLASTIC blade or credit card.
