I have a 55g with 7 cichlids in with a couple random cermic peices I have made from class. And I was sick of everytime I would walk by, they would always be hiding, so i was like, you know, if I bought you guys, I want to see you when I walk past! So I took out the pottery and low and behold, there was a baby cichlid, the cutest little thing ever! so I hurried up and put him in my smaller tank hoping that the bigger ones would not eat him up! here the little guy is, I would not have thought they would have actually have reproduced in the tank, but I guess they do!

Cute little guy! Cichlids tend to reproduce very readily, and can raise thier babies up to a good age.

Do you know what kind of cichlids you have?

When you removed the pottery did you put something else in there for them to hide in? They will be extremely uncomfortable if you dont provide them with rockwork or something to hide in!

+1 on that, that does look like an african, its kinda big were there any more it must been in there a while, my little red devils are like 2monthes and are only half that size!

africans, ya theres a bunch of fake pants in there they hide behind. What are the suitable enviornments for the cichilds to reproduce?

Lots of rockwork. Mbuna are rockdwelling cichlids and need caves to establish territory, breed, and be overall happy. Haps are more open-water fish but will feel most comfortable if they know the rocks are there if they need to hide.

Sand it best as well, but fine gravel will suffice.

It's a bit counter intuitive, but putting MORE cover in might be a better way to go. If there's only a few caves to hide in, they will be considered prime real estate and the cichlids will be loath to leave them. With tons of rockwork, they will be much more outgoing (they know there will always be someplace for them to hide).
