Cutting back the flow of a Rena Filstar XP3? Use as CO2 reactor?

I have available, dirt cheap, a very good (basically new) Filstar XP3.

The problem is, my only tank right now is a 10g and I just downgraded from a big fancy reef setup. The reef just ate too much time, but man was it glorious.

Anyhow, the 10 will be a planted tank with your normal mix of corys and cardinal tetras.

Obviously an XP3 is way overkill.

Can you throttle back such a huge filter's flow rate to around 200gph? I can create a spray bar that would diffuse the flow.

Also, anyone ever use an XP as a CO2 diffuser (soda bottle, yeast, sugar generator)?

Any help is appreciated!

Sorry man but xp3 is WAY too much for a 10. It's made for a175. There is an attachment to control flow, but it's still a wast of one of the best filters going.

If you can get it for a good price, get it. Then get a bigger tank:)

I have the XP3 (on a bigger tank). I am in the midst of doing DIY CO2, right now I am just using a tube and an airstone (once I figure out the leak in the bubble counter). I would be curious as to how you propose to use the fitler as the diffuser as that would be much easier for me.

Cutting back the intake on most magnetic drive pumps cause them to chatter badly if you cut it back too much.

However, cutting back the outflow doesn't usually do this.

I'm getting the fitler. $50 for one that's nearly new is an insane deal :D I'll just store it and save it for later if this doesn't work.

Using as a CO2-reactor-- just pipe the CO2 into the intake. Works fine on smaller systems. For tanks bigger than 20g or so you really need a dedicated reactor IMO though.
