Has anyone tried to use cuttlebone to buffer the ph. I guess you find this in the bird section of a pet store. Just wondering if it was good or not. I have africans and just didn't feel like changing the substrate to raise and hold the ph. If you have anything on this, please let me know. Just curious.

use baking soda to raise pH.. moderate amounts raise the pH greatly... and it's far less expensive.

Cuttlebone to raise KH would be painfully slow and highly expensive. I have it in all of my tanks for the snails, and it dissolves too slowly to have any realized effect on water parrameters. Crushed coral (or any other form of calcium carbonate, the finer it is the faster it works) or baking soda. Just be careful with the baking soda, it's very fast ( almost instantaneous) and a little bit goes a long long way. IME 1 tsp baking soda in 30gallons of water will raise the KH 1 PPM.
